Sheen Falls Lodge is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s best kept secrets – a magnificent country hotel, tucked away in the heart of the Kerry countryside that truly must be seen to be experienced.
From the moment that I entered the hotel, I was greeted by the friendly staff with lyrical Kerry accents, the homely welcome feels as though you are returning to visit old friends; shoulders instantly relax as a wave of tranquillity washes over you. And we had just only just reached the hotel reception desk!
Each room in the hotel is carefully positioned so guests can bask in the stunning local scenery – the rooms at the back overlook the rippling Sheen Waterfall while views from the front of the hotel sweep across Kenmare Bay.
We were lucky to be visiting Sheen Falls Lodge for the Old World New World Wine Weekend event on October 16th, the second of three fabulous wine events organised by the hotel this winter and without doubt, the ultimate treat for food and wine enthusiasts.
The evening began with a drinks reception in the Drawing Room where our host, wine connoisseur and owner of Tindal Wine Merchants, Mr Anthony Tindall joined us to introduce the first of the evening’s wines – a light and fresh chardonnay blend that was made for warm summer evenings followed by an earthy South African cabernet. Anthony was shortly joined by French sommelier and business partner Pascal Playon who, along with our French waiter for the evening Quentin, educated our small group on the fascinating stories of New World and Old World wines.
Our ‘light’ supper in The Falls Restaurant transpired to be a fabulous 4 course menu, with beautiful variations of the restaurant’s in-house smoked salmon to start, followed by a mouth-watering Tipperary Hereford Beef Fillet. Mr Tindal had worked closely with Executive Chef Phillip Brazil to carve out a menu that perfectly complimented the wines of the evening, and the result was a flawless assortment of food and wine that worked together in effortless harmony.
We had the pleasure of sampling wines from all over the ‘New World’ throughout the evening, including delectable Chilean Malbec blends and fruity Argentinian whites, all the while enjoyed the relaxed company of our hosts and fellow guests in the beautiful surroundings of the hotel.
Sheen Falls Lodge is truly a magical 5* getaway like no other. The winter wine evenings offer a thoroughly enjoyable and unique educational experience, especially (but not only) for anyone with an interest in learning about wines.
The next event takes place on November 13th and 14th, with a celebratory Champagne Weekend (in association with Tindal Wines and Lanson) to toast the launch of the new Lanson house champagne at Sheen Falls Lodge.
